Update Who's Responsible for a Matter in MatterSuite

Assigning and Reassigning Roles on a Matter

How to update who's responsible for a matter in MatterSuite

As a matter progresses, you may need to update who's responsible for it, or adjust who has access. MatterSuite makes it easy to update these roles at any point in time.

In this article:

  • Assigning roles during matter creation

  • Updating roles after a matter is created

  • Managing access with Permissions

  • What happens after someone is assigned

Assigning Roles During Matter Creation

When creating a new matter, you'll set the key roles directly within the Matter Details section, including the Responsible Attorney, Originating Attorney, and Paralegal. You'll also set the matter's Permissions, determining who can access it.

Updating Roles After a Matter is Created

If responsibilities shift, you can open the matter at any time, head to the Details tab, and update the Responsible Attorney, Originating Attorney, or Paralegal fields directly. This makes it simple to reassign a matter if someone goes on leave, changes teams, or if the case needs to be handed over to a more suitable attorney.

Managing Access with Permissions

Access to a matter is controlled separately through the Permissions section, and just like the roles above, this can also be edited after the matter has already been created. You can expand or restrict access at any time, choosing between pre defined default groups.

What Happens After Someone is Assigned

Once someone is assigned to a matter, whether as the Responsible Attorney, Originating Attorney, or Paralegal, they'll automatically receive a notification letting them know they've been added to the matter.
